are the dead really silent?I ran. Something was chasing me. I could not see what it was. But I knew. I knew what was calling for me. Tearing, ripping, clinging to my soul and crying out for me. Crying out to me. Calling for me. Singing to me. Her voice. Their voices. Those I had never known and those who had known me all my life. Their tones were soft and gentle. Their cries harsh and biting. They did not touch me, they never could. But I could feel their breath on my skin.
The winter had died and the veil was still thin. I did not know which path I ran until the trees cast their shadows on me. I could see a thin light of the dawn poking through the leaves. All of the sudden the sun was bright in my eyes. The light I had yearned for had come to grace me with sight. And I saw.
I saw that I had run. I ran from what was mine and the life I had given. I had run from the horror I had committed and I left the world out of balance. I stopped. I stood.
I had left them.
I had left them with nothing.
My body quivered under the weight of being. It curled in on itself even as I stood. My head between my forelegs, and my tail clenched to my stomach, I was sinking into myself, into the spiral.
A soft keening emitted from my body. With the one wrong I had walked a path I could not turn back. This was the wrong place, but it was where I needed to be. I could not move from the spot as if fate had struck me there. My breath was caught in my throat and agony seared through my body.
I had left them.
