Thoth stopped in his tracks as Sekhmet’s spiralling emotions confused and twisted in his own. She had always been a part of him, his constant companion and his charge. Now they had been tied by more than their paths. Fate had strung them together to solidify their beings and he had no choice but to fall into step. Even as his soul did so he could still feel the tear within himself and the calls towards a different world and a different purpose. His teeth longed to feel his own flesh, while his paws encouraged him to walk elsewhere.
His thoughts turned as he continued to feel the conflict within her. Mouth open in deep huffs of distress. He was the cause of her anguish and he was the one to bring it upon her. Still he did not know what he had done, nor what he could have prevented it. She wished him to stay, and also to leave. She wanted him near, but could not stand to look at him nor be near him. He wanted to take away her confusion, bring back the balance of the world, right the wrong that had offcurred and kill the festering that had begun to grow.
She spoke to him and his eyes snapped to her again. He had always been free, he had made the choice. Now she could not give him his true freedom, he would forever be locked to her. His soul rested in her paws. Her words grated his ears and his panting became harder as his very being caught in his throat, gagging and choking him. If she was rejecting the bond, defying fate, he struggled to hold onto what little he could know for certain.
Thoth laid on the ground, his eyes wide as his mouth. He was too young to be able to think clearly and see the paths before him. The overwhelming reality of the twists his life and his choices had taken him tipped the scales. He felt wrong and currupt. The need to protect and to save, balance and right. It was where their desires lined up, though their outcomes were shadowed and uncertain.
Free, he repeated in his mind. There was very little that was truly free. He looked up at her, still panting, unable to request, unable to speak. Through the chaos of her feelings battling with his own he could not grasp the truth of her desires. If she needed him to stay, fate decreed he would. If she told him to go, the break would cause the bond to shatter.
