Naps are so wonderful. I lay in the den, sleeping close to Mom as the two of us rested in the midday sunlight. Her soft breathing and gentle heart beat were like a lullaby that lulled me into sleep. I don’t know how much time passed, but I woke with a sudden start, full of energy and a desire to play. I nudged Mom, whining loudly, but all that got me was a grumpy growl and a non-too-gentle shove outside. Fine, I would find someone else to play with! I trotted away from the hole, my paws making spots in the snow as I moved along. I wasn't too fond of the white stuff. It hid my best flower friends away! Daddy said that they would come back next spring, but that seemed like so long from now. I wanted to roll around in the petals and chase the dandelion wisps.
The sound of paws rushing through the heavy snow made my ears stand up and my lily white eyes gazed around the area. If not for his red markings, I wouldn't have been able to spot him. Of course, the sound he was making was also a dead giveaway. Being the younger sister of two brothers was both a blessing and a curse. Fenyang was always nice to me, if sometimes a little rough when we played. Xerxes was impossible to play with and if I even tried he would bark at me and chase me away. But Daddy told me that my brothers loved me very much and would always protect me from bad things. This made me feel better sometimes. Right now, I wasn't thinking about the bad though! As my awkward paws carried me through the snow, the only thing on my mind was playing with my brother.
I finally caught up to him, but I felt my tail fall as I watched him face plant an area free of snow, the dead grass failing to conceal him from anything. Galloping to his side, I whined as I started to gently licked his face. I didn't like seeing the ones I love get hurt. Sure that there was no blood or any cuts, I nuzzle his cheek softly before retreating to smile at him. "Are you okay? What are you doing out here?" My answer came as I turned to see the last of the rabbits scatter to the safety of their burrows. Tilting my head to the side, I returned my attention to Fenyang. "Were you trying to play with those rabbits? They don't like it when we play with them. They always run away from me when I try to play with them and Flowers. Flowers likes to play! Maybe we can find some under all this icky snow!
