He could sense the darkness of whatever had happened here but he felt that he was missing pieces. He needed more if he was to find the boy's sister and return her safely back to her worried brother. He never thought of the boy's lineage or that he might be related to Aranck himself. He only knew that the boy smelled of the swamps and marshes, though he had never been close to the former alpha himself or he might have known the relation in their unique smells. As it was, he never even got the boy's name. He was too concerned about helping him with his own anxiety. He didn't know that Aranck had left a lot of fatherless bastards behind when he got killed and that he wasn't much of a father to them when he was alive. If he knew, he would have pitied the pups and perhaps hated Aranck for his disregard for the lives he was creating. Dexter had never been close enough to anyone to make that kind of decision but he knew if the day came, he would be a father to those pups no matter what and he would make sure they knew who their parents were and that they were loved.
He didn't know that Aranck had killed Aithne. He'd only heard rumors of the terrors of Aranck. He didn't know what was true or false. But the wolf standing only feet away and looking nervous? That was something worth investigating. The wolf shifted as if he needed to move away from whatever it was he was standing near and Dexter's ears flicked in curiosity. Finally the wolf spoke and it seemed his theory was correct. His lip quirked in a smirk. He listened carefully then as the wolf told him to come look at something. He heard about the children of Aranck and how they'd gone missing from Iromar and instantly he thought of the young anxious boy. Could he be a child of the former alpha? It was a possibility. He nodded in agreement as he stepped over to see what the wolf was talking about. His breath caught for a moment when he saw the first set of bones...and then there were more.
The ground was littered in tiny puppy bones and instantly Dexter thought of the boy's sister and if this could possibly be her. It didn't smell quite close enough to his scent but it was a pup that someone had killed, viciously at that. Who would do such a thing? He sniffed around and then scowled at Jackdaw.
"Yeah, I guess so if they're not even bothering to look. The live one anyway."
He looked back at the bones, listening as Jackdaw pointed out the bones and said that he had tracked the female. He wondered if she was one of the children he was looking for. Then the wolf asked for the boy's name and Dexter furrowed his brows, feeling like an idiot for not asking the boy's name when he had talked to him. He shrugged.
"I'm sorry to say that I never got his name. But he was pacing anxiously, worried about his sister. If you say there are multiple children missing then it would be a possibility that him and his sister are both children of Aranck. I know they were taken from Iromar. The boy was stolen by a Taviora wolf meant to lure Aranck himself into coming for him and his sister was apparently taken by...someone else."
He scowled again at the bones, hoping they didn't hint of the sister's fate as well. He didn't understand why the mate would flee without checking on her children. Wouldn't she be worried about their safety as well? He could tell Jackdaw had bitter emotions about such actions as well and he couldn't blame him. He glanced back at him.
"Would you like to come meet him? Maybe you can identify him and then report back to your alphess. I would just like to bring him some news of his sister, anything better than just this."
He nudged his nose at all the bones again, his chest tight at such a heart wrenching sight. Sure, he did bad things himself but never children.
