Early on in this encounter, he saw how best to keep her interest. He had to look unsure but not full on scared. To be scared might be taken as being weak and she probably wouldn't tolerate the weak. He wouldn't endanger himself so he had to walk a fine line with this one. Fairly noted. She was already proving rather unpredictable and he knew he was still too young and awkward to fight her off if she jumped him so he would have to walk that line if he planned on learning anything from her. She seemed amused so he had to play on that. He had to keep her intrigued. The smell of death didn't bother him, though he didn't really have a lot of experience with it. What his parents brought him was always fresh so it didn't smell decayed and rotted like this did. He wrinkled his nose a little but otherwise, he was good at keeping a good profile.
She didn't seem too intrigued with his words though. She shifted and her eyes narrowed and he watched her carefully in case he needed to bolt or something. He wouldn't risk his own life for training. But then she sneered at him when he told her to use him and he felt that maybe he had said the right thing, after all. She leaned forward and all at once, their noses were almost touching. It was all he could do to keep from jerking back but he clenched his jaw and held his ground. He needed to pass this test. He pricked his ears, listening carefully to the words she spoke. Empty vessels? Was she talking about him? Finally the wolf leaned back and he felt he could breathe a little easier but he continued to listen. They were interesting words but he had no idea what they meant.
"Maybe knowledge, or maybe just blood and fluids and organs. Who's decision is it to make?"
That sounded deep, too, right? He needed her to think he at least had some wit about him. It might be the only way he was to survive this encounter. She was already looking at him with more curiosity so he felt that was a good sign. Slowly her paw moved and he was able to see the skull again. He studied it carefully but didn't move from his spot, not wanting her to think he was trying to take it or something. His mouth parted a little in intrigue, having never seen a decaying skull like this. It was both grotesque and fascinating at the same time. He watched as she lowered her muzzle to it before looking back up at him expectantly. His ears flicked back and forth uncertainly, unsure of what she was expecting.
Her question really threw him off but he knew he had to come up with something or his opportunity would be lost. He tilted his head, calculating for a minute.
"The ending of a life, or the beginning of a death. Could be a whole new life entirely, like where does the soul go? Does it have to watch helplessly as the body goes limp and then starts to rot, piece by piece? Or does it flit to a new body and a new beginning, full of possibility?"
He looked up at her, hoping he had triggered something with that rounded explanation. He had no idea what she was wanting him to say so he had to come up with something. Hopefully that would work.
