The more Oswin talked, the more awake Koray felt. The rage in his belly had caused a ripple effect, sending waves of adrenaline through his blood and into every corner of his body. Suddenly he was no longer tired; suddenly every inch of him was wired and trembling, and his breath was shallow in his chest. He regarded the mare who challenged him with wildness in his green eyes and a spasm on his curled lip.

Somewhere deep inside him, her words had their desired effect. A seed of doubt bloomed into existence: one too weak to overcome the passion that had besieged his body, but that would creep up on him later, when he was alone. Right now, he was aware only of the supreme injustice he felt Oswin was dealing him, but also the strange excitement it aroused in him. No one, not even Vita, had ever challenged him like Oswin was. She was stupid and foolish, yes, but a part of him was attracted to the strength in her.

Koray might have attacked her right then if Vita Nova had not spoken. He struggled to contain the surprise her words caused, instead focusing on the wave of pleasure they brought him. He had won without even having to fight. Without taking his eyes off Oswin, Koray allowed his aggressive grimace to become a mocking grin. "You heard her," he growled, and lashed his russet tail for effect. "It's time for you to leave."
