“I don’t know!” Pilar almost shouted at him, fighting back tears that began to well in her eyes. It wasn’t her job to tell him how she could prove he was trustworthy. Trust was not something that could be doled out like a business card—it was all based on instinct. The same instinct that had told the seal brown girl that Silvi was sweet and good was the same one that told her Jaxon was not. She did not want to back down on her convictions. It was confusing enough to be as forgetful as she was. She couldn’t doubt her instincts too, otherwise she would have lost herself completely.

When Silvi apologized, Pilar’s demeanor immediately softened again. She pressed herself into her friend’s neck, her soft nose rubbing against her cheek. “No no Silvi,” she said quietly. “It’s not your fault. You did nothing wrong.”

She flicked her strangely curved ears back and forth as she pulled away from Silvi again. It was upsetting for Pilar that this whole ordeal had made her new friend sad—she didn’t want that at all, and if that meant she had to suck it up and deal with this unsettling stallion then that was precisely what she would do.

“We don’t have to go anywhere we don’t want,” she finished. As she turned back toward Jaxon, she pried a little further and decided she would play his game for now.

“So we’re all here,” she said flatly. “Now what?”
