Gravekeeper. It was quite the name. She had thought the strange man with the dead eyes might covet the position but he had barely even flinched at its conception. That had caught her off guard and yet, she had no issue with sharing such a duty. After all, her intentions were not his and his were not hers and thus, they could co-exist. She knew that much. And so, she had not blinked at his disinterest and in fact, she had almost felt some part of her stir with happiness with the knowledge that she might be able to find a place greater than simply a number. She had never truly cared for such things but some far off part of her blood did - mother? Father? Who could say anymore - they were but names in the mind, memories and dreams. Perhaps her sudden interest in growing closer to death had stirred them into action.
Halcyon had summoned her in a much more timely manner than she had anticipated; she had expected to wait and yet, she could not be too surprised. After all, his mate's womb swelled with life and so, she had her suspicions his mind might have roamed towards the realm of death in response. Perhaps he had thought upon his soul sickness and what might have cured it now that he had taken his place as their leader again... much had happened in these seasons. Spring brought more with it than just blossoms and fauns. It made her feel on edge, as if she was holding her breath each time she inhaled. Closer to death, she would be.
She moved in silence even when she came upon him; she watched him closely as she slithered into place several feet from him, to his left as she drew herself to be seated. Her head slowly tilted, the wild of her eyes sauntering between her and the graves; her gaze rested idly on the wetness of his eyes as he sung. She listened closely in an effort to decipher his song and yet, part of her recoiled at the absence of silence; they were with the dead now. She wanted to hear them. She could feel them beneath them, see them in the greenness of the grass and the flowers that bloomed above. The wind was kissed with their names as it poured across the plains. Yet, he sung and so, she listened and watched, waited and hummed beneath her breath to her own tune.
