Nova breathed a heavy sigh as Oswin's question filled the empty air all around them. "Are you certain Nyah is Koray's?"
She knew it was coming... eventually. The steely grey mare with the patch of white at her belly offered her sister an uneasy grin and shifted her weight uncomfortably over her four hooves. "She's not Koray's." She said bluntly with the flick of her dark grey tail. "I let him... back in the Desert because... because I was afraid he would have killed her. Hell, maybe me, when he realized she wasn't...." Her thoughts were jumbled, as such was her explanation. But the fear she felt during that period of her life, essentially the full length of her pregnancy, was not. It was real and all encompassing, piercing and paralyzing. The longer she stayed in the Desert, the more unraveled the perlino stallion had become. He had struck Evren. There was no telling what his rage would have evoked in him, had he learned the truth upon the birth of Nova's child.
Memories of her faltering, of her giving in to let him mount her, knowing all of this, made her physically shudder. It was a memory and a sensation she had tried so hard to forget. Warm tears began to well in the mare's eyelids and she felt foolish for her reaction now, but she couldn't stop her frame from physically shaking. Nova let out a loud snort and breathed in deeply, smiling sweetly to Nyah and Klara when they looked back at their mothers for a brief second during their banter. Then she turned to face her sister again. "Nyah's sire is a stallion named Fallo. He used to live in the Lagoon but I haven't seen or heard from him since I told him I was pregnant." She said matter-of-factly. "I came to him for help when I realized what Koray could do. But like every other stallion in my life, he was useless. And of course, he split." She said sorely.
But Nova knew Fallo wasn't all bad. He had tried to help her once. He tried to help her find Evaline. There was still a glimmer of hope deep in her gut that the grey, heavy-set stallion would do the right thing. He might turn up again one day.
"But he gave me Nyah, like Koray gave you Klara." She tried to say without her voice cracking from emotion. And that was what it all came down to, she thought sternly.
When Oswin confirmed that Nova and Nyah could stay, she bumped her sister on the shoulder with her damp nose, the skin there wet from her tears. "Thank you." She said, her tone barely more audible than a whisper. But her demeanor turned as their conversation focused on the Desert and Salem, in general. "If you go back, just promise me you'll be careful." She reiterated again. A part of Nova ached she could go too, if only to look for Evren. But it was too dangerous. Not after Shamwari defeated Koray and not ever with Nyah at her side. "Koray's sister, Evren, was my only friend when I lived there. I miss her. If you do go back, please tell her that for me."
