Romance is in the air...this is probably the most beautiful and scenic place in Blossom Forest. For the athletic and determined to come with their mates, for time away from pups. Only adults may come here; some of the ledges are too far apart for teens or pups to cross and some too high to scale.

Be careful of what you touch lest the grave be what you lust

Athene felt relief that no marks of jealousy or anger crossed across Sabelle‘s face when she spoke of her new litter of pups. But that relief faded quickly when Sabelle commented on them, or rather, commented upon the fact that Athene was going to put them through the trials. It seemed that Athene would have to explain this to Sabelle, just as she had once explained it to Pierce. The circumstances had been much different back then - she had been telling Pierce that she had aborted their litter of pups. He had not exactly taking it… well… And could not understand the purpose of the trials. She had done it because she knew that his other litter of pups from that season, the one that Sabelle belonged to, had been born much earlier and it would have been unfair to pit her youngins against them. Pierce’s opinion had been to let all of them live. Had he... had Pierce told Sabelle about the trials, about Athene’s explanation? Did she understand? Obviously not, if she was questioning Athene now. The warrior bristled the hairs down her spine - Gwyneira and Sergei were her offspring, to do with as she pleased but more importantly to raise them as she saw fit. And she wanted, just as her forbearers had always wanted, to ensure the only the strongest survived. She only wanted the best from each litter to be her legacy to this earth - she would not stand for anything weak nor second rate. It was a kindest, despite the fact that everyone else saw it as a cruelty - it prevented overpopulation and gave each survivor the best chance at a good life.

That I have lost pups before has no bearing on these.
I chose to let those go as a matter of ease.
You and your siblings were already born -
Mine would have been unable to compete without scorn

“The competition would have been unfair, you see
But your father did not agree and so it was all upon me
I mourned their deaths for that single day
And then worked to be your teacher to improve your way.

“The fate of my previous pups will have no bearing on new life
But one must die so the other will have less strife.
So train them I will, to the best of my ability
And whoever wins will choose one path with firm rigidity.

“It is in this way that I was raised and trained
To lead any other life would be weak and strained
But, you see, this way is surely best
To only allow one to live who will rise above the rest.

Athene still could not wrap her head around the fact that so few wolves here saw things the way that she and her previous pack had - in the long run, the Trial would save lives. Packmates could rely on each other to do their jobs, and not only to just do them, but do them extremely well and to the best of their abilities. Each of them was an expert in their field by the time they reached adulthood, making them an extremely valued asset. But because pliability was frowned upon and even punished, it provided a nice series of checks and balances so that no single faction could become too strong to rule out against the others. It made perfect sense, and though they all mourned the loss of some of their young, loved ones, it ultimately bonded them together - first in grief, and then in happiness when the winners developed into all that they were meant to be.

Whether or not Sabelle said anything in response, the conversation went on. As was with before, when both of them were living under the same pack, when they had first developed their bond with one another, Sabelle had always been chatty, inquisitive, curious. She wanted to know how to do everything, but also why it needed to be done that way, and when it could be different. How could it be different. She wanted to know everything about everything - it had been part of what made her a good student, and the main reason why she had been so unique of a student to Athene. After all, back in her homeland, pups were not allowed to be pups - they were not playful nor allowed to badger others with questions. They were respectful from the start, it was only once respect was gained that they could relax, having earned the right to have individuality. But Sabelle, even without the rigidity and regime of Athene‘s and Hellene‘s initial pack, had done well merely because she wanted to. Nothing was forced upon her, but she had the desire to succeed, that had been enough. Athene knew that she would now be an asset to whoever she was around, especially in a pack setting, and that Kershov would accept another able bodied varg, but Athene also knew that Sabelle would be hesitant. Athene spoke of it, and Sabelle could not help but agree - what would be the use a loner? Still, she showed some curiosity at the mention of said pack, and wanted more information about it. The warrior clearly shrugged, the thick ruff that was draped over her shoulders rippling slightly at the motion- what was there to tell that Sabelle would not have already guessed? After all, Athene would only submit to a strong leader, most likely another of the warrior faction. She would not think the scenery important, and so though she might make note of it, it would not be a deciding factor. It would be a fair pack, but a strong pack… And really, what else mattered. And so though she did not respond, she thought about Sabelle’s phrasing, her choice of words.

But then came the moment of truth - what Sabelle herself even admitted that she did not know what use she would be outside of a pack. It was not just true of Sabelle - it was true of all wolves. They were not a species meant for loneliness. Yes, could be strong, but they were also large and required a lot of meat - a pack was stronger by definition, but almost also out of necessity should they hope to ever become strong enough to procreate, they needed the security of a pack to protect the den that the pups would hide it, and the camaraderie of a pack to help care for and aid in the upbringing. And so it was not a question of whether or not a wolf could live alone - it could. It was not a question of whether wolf could have pups on their own, without a pack - they could. But they should not, both for their own sake so that they had a plan should they die or get in trouble, and for their pups, so that the pups would never be orphans, would never be abandoned.

Your use is limited as a loaner.
Other than to survive until you are an old kroner
You have no responsibility, no others to care for
But there is so much more to want, so much to live for.

“Where I live is as you would expect
And so I shall not tell you anything direct
I cannot force you to live there and wouldn’t even if I could
But I will tell you that I very much think that you should.
