Iliamna had spent the journey here fuming. Whether it was at her former comrades, or herself, she honestly didn't know anymore. I was hungry, she'd said, and they'd said that everyone was hungry, which was true; all of them had been more or less starving. Which apparently was not a good enough excuse to steal food from fellow pack members. And then they'd kicked her out. Somewhat violently, too. But none of them had really had enough energy to deliver lasting damage - so did that make it okay? Of course not; she'd been born there, she had family there, she grew up next to those wolves. But - if that was really so important, why did she take the food in the first place? Because she'd been starving. That was the answer. If she hadn't done it, she would probably be dead. There was no honor in death. And now look at her. Very much alive and in a new land with lots more food, thank you very much.

But - it had been wrong. So very, very wrong. Which was what Iliamna had been trying (and failing miserably) to put in a dark corner of her mind and forget about, because it made her feel worse than a filthy rotting corpse. It was wrong, because that wolf had been starving, just like she had been, and she'd taken from him anyway. It was wrong, because she'd grown up beside him and played together, chasing butterflies and shoving their faces in patches of flowers before the famine struck. It was wrong because she knew him and he was sweet and playful and in no way deserved what she did to him. Stealing from the hungry was what villains did.

Did that make her a villain, for trying to survive?

The thoughts followed Iliamna wherever she went. She walked through the land for days on end in an attempt to keep herself busy and her mind away from the thoughts, to no avail. And it was because of this wandering that she stumbled upon a rather odd looking - fox? Well, it kind of looked like a fox. Did... foxes have blue eyes? And a wolfish smell? "Can you... talk?" she tried,
