You will be even more shocked when you see the final roster. I am behind this project 100% (so far... things may change) just for the record. The enthusiasm that it has generated is off the charts, lots of people have come back to play amateur. Today and tomorrow the tryouts are going to bring about 80 people to try for the roster, which will be judged by a panel of several people including upper management, and Calder is going all the way to try to bring the best product they can without investing in a dead-end full size court.
I am behind it NOT because it is "real jai alai" which we know is not, but this type of smaller court is the one that brings people to try the sport and then play amateur and fall in love with the sport. I hope it will start the ball rolling and generate interest in real jai alai again, for which we have Dania and Miami.
Back in the 80's and 90's at NM we had three courts, a small rubber ball, the 90 feet plastic ball and a 140 ft hardball. A lot of people including me played hardball, but it was the 90 ft court that was ALWAYS full, and most of them went to Miami and Dania and kept the enthusiasm going.
I will be there watching my friends play as much as I can go, and I hope they will succeed, and renew the interest in real jai alai. Replies:
