A soft word came from Evren’s lips – barely audible, indistinguishable to Persephone as to its meaning – but before she could ask it came again, louder, and Evren’s legs were beating their way across the sand. Persephone followed after her without hesitation, although she kept her pace a short distance behind her. When they reached the distant figure, who she could see now was a young, golden-skinned colt, Evren embraced him with muffled words and a teary look. Persephone waited, curious but cautious, giving the pair some space as she listened to the glimpses of conversation she could hear between them. She averted her eyes as the sobs were driven out, until finally she felt the heat of someone’s gaze on her. When she looked back, the boy and his mother were both looking at her. A smile curled Evren’s lips, and Persephone couldn’t help but return it – it was good to see her smile again, after the panic of their time together so far. She came a little closer. Persephone noticed the unusual pause and choice of words Evren used to introduce the colt, but thought little of it – it had been an unusual situation to say the least, so a couple of words hardly seemed something to wonder over. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Han,” she replied, taking a small step closer and offering what she hoped was an encouraging smile. “I hope you didn’t get into too much trouble while we were on our way.” |
