As the two set out, Melisma walked quietly along behind him. Her long legs carried her easily across the sand, although she found it strange how it sometimes shifted beneath her. The Crossing’s ground had never done that, and she wondered if someday the ground might open up and swallow her? Lost in her own thought, she didn’t think to try and talk, but Akello was able to pull her back into the present. “Melisma.” she answered the young stud colt, ears perking forward when she seen the water ahead. She sparred no time in getting herself a long drink when he offered, washing away the salt that had still been stuck in her throat, and to help her cool from the heat she wasn’t used too.
When she was finished, Melisma once again fell into step with the colt. But it didn’t take them long to find the large painted stallion. She halted, raising her head and perking her eyes as she watched him approach. He was at such ease here, and nothing like the stallion she had seen in the Meadow that lonely night. The affectionate way he nuzzled Akello caused a curve return to her lips; not quite a smile, but it was a much softer expression than she usually carried.
“The Crossing has become rather crowded.” Melisma replied. Her gaze then swept the desert around them, not seeing another soul despite knowing they were here somewhere. “I thought I might take you up on your offer, if it still stands?” she asked, returning her green gaze to the stallion.
