How had it come to this?

Endless salt waters swarmed around her black head as she snaked her neck in vain to keep from sinking. Her legs below the surface were beginning to trash less and less as each second ticked by in her mind. How long had she been at it? She has lost track of time itself, not knowing day or night, only the cold waters that surrounded her. Each wave, however small, felt like an icy heavy hand gripping her soaked coat. It threatened to drag her down, to end her life. Each time it pushed her head down she fought that much harder to break the surface and breath once more. How easy it would be to just let those hands push her under, and let her slip into the infinite blue.

Another wave rolled over her head.

They were getting bigger now, more difficult to fight. Her head slipped under more and more as her legs reached their limit. She could feel them being sucked back behind her like some monster from the deep was drawing her close so it could swallow her whole. That would be just her luck wouldn't it? The last thing she heard before slipping under for the last time was the din of a roar that that filled her dizzy head. Then there was nothing. Her legs stopped fighting the pull as her body slipped underneath the water. There was no sound, only an infinite blue, and she closed her eyes. She didn't know why she still held her breath as her body was sent spinning into the endless night, perhaps it was some ancient part of her brain that made her cling to life so hopelessly. She continued being flung through this under water space like a rocket exploring the unknown.

That is until she stopped.

Her body hit something with such force that it knocked the wind from the lungs, and she began to panic. Waves above her flung her now thrashing body that a rag doll against something coarse that scratched her skin. A curious feeling began to creep at the back of her mind. The weightlessness that she had become so accustomed to was slowly being replaced with a heaviness she had not known for moons. With one more thrust from a curling wave her body hit land. She lay there with eyes not focusing on anything particular. The only thing that had her undivided attention was the sounds of birds, of wind rustling trees. The sounds of waves seemed so far off to her even as they rushed past her body. Beyond the smell of salt she could smell grass and wild flowers, and she could see an infinite blue. Not the murky blue of the ocean, but of the sky warm and radiant. And she wept.
