Fawn did not realize the heat she had come from until the coolness of the ocean enveloped her. She had been an outcast; an unwanted cross of warring breeds, forced to live in the shadows of wealthy herds, but she never thought to leave the desert. It was her home, and her love for the thirsty dryness outweighed any abuse she endured for her existence.

Even now, Fawn regretted her abandonment the second her hooves touched the waves. She had never been worthy, but now she would be forgotten. It was too late to turn back; the ocean pulled her out, dousing the fires of her golden pelt and darkening her fur to a mottled brown. Panic began to set in as she fought the waves, and it wasn’t until exhaustion weighted her legs that they finally stopped thrashing. She realized then, as she began to black out, that it was not worth it to fight. She did not know if she would survive; at this point, she did not care. She would float until she didn’t, and wash up wherever the ocean saw fit to deposit her.

The ocean evidently decided to spit her out in a land of overwhelming green. Fawn’s honey-colored eyes swept tiredly across the white sand, to the edge of the shore where abundant grass and trees overtook the island. She was reminded harshly of her decision, and the realization that her life had been changed irrevocably weighed in her stomach like a stone. She could not bring herself to rise; instead, she lay pitifully in the sand, her eyes glued to the tiny grains in an attempt to convince herself that she had never left home.
