The quiet before the storm

The colors of dusk were always her favorite, and Kimber stood for a long time along the shore of the meadow over looking the gentle lapping of water that danced with the sky’s display. In the distance, she could also see the outline of Atlantis. The memory of the warm sun upon her back and the sound of the jungle birds briefly flitted through her mind, but the young mare pushed it away just as she turned her back to the Island. She would not return there, nor to the Island of Salem. They were just memories, and that was how it would stay.

Walking through the tall grasses, Kimber reached her head down along the way to snag a few bites. She wondered where Askold was, knowing her red guardian was never too far from her side. Perhaps the new scents of the season had been too much? Too distracting? Kimber had felt the change without her own body, but she would not succumb to such feelings. How could she, when she didn’t even have a home?

I want to live with you. Where ever you choose to go.

Askold’s words filtered through her mind and Kimber gave a soft sigh. So far, she hadn’t went anywhere. Left stagnant here upon the Crossing, the painted girl wasn’t sure where she should go. Would there be anywhere that would welcome them both? Lost in thought, Kimber continues to wander and eat without paying much attention as to where she is going. It is safe here, after all, so why should she worry to where her hooves might take her?

Yet, as she crosses the invisible barrier between the Meadow and the Commons, Kimber is slow to notice. She had never went into the forbidden land before, as she liked to think of it. Never wanting to lose her own freedom to the whims of a stranger. But as the scenery continues to change and become unfamiliar, Kimber was pulled from her thoughts. Stopping, her gaze swept the area and only then did she realize what she had done. A heavy stone of dread suddenly dropped in her stop and her heart hammered in her chest. Frozen for a few moments, the mare turned and tried to make her way back to the meadow hoping no one had noticed.
