IN ALL MY DREAMS
I DROWN
She did not sleep. No, Moonstruck merely rested, tucked away near the river. She enjoyed the silence and the peace, the steady trickle of the water. It made her bones feel less heavy for though the small thing was young, there was a weight carried that she rarely showed, buried deep under her odd ways and childish nature.
She was not upset, however, to have this rest interrupted. Something moved past, heading towards the heart of where they both currently were, and two fuzzy ears instantly pricked forward. She waited a heartbeat, one two, before taking a step forward and craning her head around the tree she had hefted herself against, barely able to make out what was the shape of the stranger and what was simply shadows.
Quietly, curiously, she followed, making sure to hang back, picking her way carefully in a hopscotch kind of motion. The clouds slid away from the moon, and that is when the scene became clearer. Light slipped in, finding a home on skin.
“Well, hello there.” She whispered to herself, still too far away for this stranger she now watched to hear the words.
The thought briefly occurred to her, as she followed this golden creature with a glint in her eye, that this whole encounter was becoming a little creepy. And to her, that thought was funny. So she laughed.
Admittedly, this made things even creepier. Oops. It was a high, bell-like noise that lingered through the silence before getting lost in the steady rumble of the falls. He would know she was there now, if he hadn't suspected before. With a roll of her shoulders, and a smile forming on her black lips, she closed some of the distance, craning her head slightly to look up at the larger male. She blinked, then cleared her throat, as if about to proclaim something extremely profound and wise.
“You’re wet. And surrounded by bugs.”
