nobody sees, nobody knows

It is not distrust for the pinto mare that makes her hesitant to speak. As much as Monster was mostly unknown to her, so were the vast majority of creatures on this planet. Only two held the dubious honor of knowing her better than Monster now did, and one of those she wished she could forget altogether. Rather, not knowing made her feel stupid, and she hated feeling as if she were even more of a burden than she already was. How many different handicaps would she heap at the doors of the Paradise herd with the inane hope that they would continue to protect her?

Both fluted ears dip back for a moment, belying the uncertainty that throbs in her chest. Still, she is glad to hear the painted mare pick up the conversation from where she'd left it, and her gaze flicks back up to her. At first, she isn't sure what Monster means and her brow creases in concern that quickly turns to horrified realization. As much as she had made the connection between what the unnamed stallion had done and the likely intent, she had not yet followed that line of thought all the way to the thought of an actual child.

The prospect of there being a real, living child being in play changed everything. Rae shivered at the prospect and swallowed hard. She couldn't even remember her own name, let alone be responsible for someone else's life and wellbeing. She had no memories to draw upon, let alone any experience with children. Or did she? Again Rae shivers, although this time it had far more to do with the fact that she may very well have had children before.

Children that would know her, even if she could not recognize them, and who would likely be heartbroken by her shortcomings.

More worryingly… what if it happened again? What if this wasn't the first time she'd washed ashore on a beach, unable to recall anything - her own name included. What if she was doomed to just repeat this cycle over and over? Could she really do that to a child?

No. Not willingly. But nor could she take away their life before it had even been lived.

Wordlessly, Rae shook her head in denial. Even if the worst did happen, surely there was someone that would take the child in. Someone that would love them and pick up where she could not. To teach them the things that she did not remember. She pictures Rougaru with a small child and a wan smile softens the frown on her lips for a moment but dies as she remembers her own misgivings.

Monster pulls her from her thoughts once more and her brow furrows again. "I don't even know how to explain it -" she began, her voice hesitant. "One minute I was asking him how the water tasted and the next he was -" she drops her gaze from Monster, her cheeks hot with shame. "He was over me."

Her skin twitches in revulsion and she shakes her head. "I don't know what I was thinking, going out there. I should've stayed."

Her natural inclination had been to stay in Paradise, but the silver stallion's kindness and his gentleness had been so profoundly moving that she had begun to hope that her fears of strangers were misguided. If Rougaru was so kind, surely the others couldn't be bad either. If only she had held onto her doubts.

After a moment's pause, she latches onto Monster's question gratefully and nods. "It's pretty here. And Rougaru has been so kind…" Her voice trails off again and her gaze finally returns to the pinto. Her next question is barely audible and tinted with anxiety. "Do you think he will be mad at me?"
