He paced restlessly by the eastern borders. He felt like pacing is all he'd been doing for weeks now as he awaited Melisma's return with Pheobe. He ached to see them again, to know how much his daughter had grown and to have the dark mare back in the Desert. His heart would feel much lighter then. The time for change was upon them and he'd already taken actions to assure the role of Lead Mare would not be empty. He'd decided after thinking upon everyone's opinions that he would allow Berit to take the title now that spring was over and she would stand as Lead Mare for two seasons, just as Melisma had. Then when Fall was over, he would have the mares take a vote for someone to stand in the spot next. Perhaps in time, someone would step forward to hold the spot indefinitely but until then, this seemed to be the best fix.

He only wanted the best for his herd. He wanted stability and he knew they all craved that. In the past two season, he'd felt more lonely in the Desert than he remembered being in a while. Maybe he needed more members, but they were harder to come by in the Common. Perhaps he would visit the other lands on the Crossing and see if anyone was around. It was better than sitting around the Desert moping, as he felt he was doing. He needed action. He needed to get out and do something. Snorting, he grabbed a few bites of grass. Maybe he'd get a little snack before he set out.
