COME HITHER

The filly before him jumped from one emotion to the next. It was hard for him to keep up. He could tell she was trying to manipulate him, using those sad eyes and half-back ears to try to humble him, make him feel for her. The only thing she was making him feel was annoyance though. How dare she try to make him feel bad for running into her when she was the one who stopped? It was clearly her fault. She looked sad for all of a second before the familiar anger returned when he shrugged it off. Probably because her tactic didn't work. Women. He was learning quickly just how conniving they could be to get something they want.

She tried to insult him, sarcasm dripping from her lips as she said it was nice to know he knew more words. In turn, he just narrowed his eyes in a disapproving glare. Of course, he knew more words. He just wasn't going to waste his breath using them, not when teeth and hooves would get a better response. Words were cheap in his opinion. He got more action with action, so that became his fallback from an early age. As the filly turned her gaze toward the ocean, he followed it for a second, if only to guess what her next move might be. His body was tense and braced, ready to give chase or cut her off at a moment's notice if she tried to run for her escape.

The young girl seemed to go off into her own head for a minute, shaking her head as if to force thoughts from her mind. The colt snorted and tilted his head, watching her curiously as he waited for her to do something. Why was she just standing there? When she looked back at him, he could see the judgement in her eyes but only met her gaze with stoic dismissal. He didn't care what she thought of him, what anyone thought of them. Words were cheap, opinions even more so. Friends wouldn't make him a good herd leader one day. Actions would. When she stomped her hoof, he thought he saw a flicker of pain or discomfort in her expression and that got his attention a little. She did it to herself, but he didn't want his mares damaged in any way, either.

When he showed interest toward the subject of her mother, the filly actually seemed to grow more angry toward him if that were even possible. Her eyes seemed to pierce him suddenly as she dared to step toward him, almost in challenge. He straightened up in response to it, his own eyes glaring right back. When she stretched her neck out as if to sniff him, he tensed but held his ground. What the heck was she doing? Then she suddenly asked if he'd seen her and he snorted and shook his head. Why would she even think that? And how would he know if he had? It's not like he kept up with the bloodlines of the horses in his herd. The filly went on, saying she looked like her and called the mare Tuari. The name didn't ring a bell to him so Alpha shook his head again. Now he was sure he didn't know her cause he did know the names of the mares here.

"No." His voice rang with finality. When he tried to ask where the mare was, he watched the sadness, a sense of defeat, spread back to the filly's features as she looked down and her voice cracked, saying she didn't know. He scowled thoughtfully at her for a moment before tossing his head. "We search." It seemed to make the most sense. He stomped his front hoof as he made the decision, leaving no room for arguement. She obviously wanted to see her mother and the mare had to be around the islands somewhere, right? He couldn't just let her go wandering off alone so he would come with her to search. That way he could make sure she didn't escape and he could take the mother for himself as well. Two for one, a good deal, right?

For a moment, he thought of the herd. He couldn't very well leave them without protection. His father still watched over the borders and checked in on the mares of Paradise; that would help. He could command his brothers Akela and Loupgaru to help out more as well. That should be enough to keep the herd defended till his return. But if they let anyone out of their sight....well, he'd make sure to let them hear about it when he got back. His gaze returned to the filly, impatience starting to leak into his features. What was the holdup? She needed to get a move-on so he could get back to protecting the rest of his herd.
