Desert

The Desert stallion didn’t keep Romulus waiting long. In response to his call, the painted Vanner appeared over the dunes and made his way toward the intruder in his territory. Romulus watched him warily, trying not to look prepared for a fight despite being prepared for a fight. He didn’t want to get caught off guard, but he also didn’t want to seem rude.

It seemed like a fight was not in store for him after all, however. The draft stallion halted and appraised Romulus, who dipped his head politely but did not take his eyes off Cain. It was only when the Desert stallion introduced himself that Romulus began to relax a little.

“Sorry for the intrusion,” he began. He pondered a moment how to word his request, if he even wanted to propose it immediately. In the end, he shrugged and continued with honesty. “My name is Romulus. I come from the Lagoon, and I do not wish to go back to that place. I have… I might have a companion, and I want to provide them a better home than the Crossing can offer. I was hoping you had room for a second.” He left it there and waited for Cain’s response. He supposed he could have been a little more conversational before pitching his request, but he had never been a chatty type. Besides, it seemed fake — he had come here to find a home first, and make friends second. Cain didn’t seem stupid, and would undoubtedly see through unnecessary friendliness. If Romulus was approached that way, he knew he would likely lose respect for whomever was trying to ask the favor. Better to just be straightforward and polite, he thought.
