First Breath After A Coma

I would honestly love you now,
But I would lovingly let you down.

When Jabari looked at the young, splashed filly, all he saw was a delicate, innocent little girl. So many others of his gender would see her as tender and ripe for the picking. But when he stared at her for too long, all he thought of was Daphne and Dahlia, his twins, and his sweet Demeter. What an awful father he had been to all three of them. What a terrible protector, and lover, he had been to their mothers.

The painted stallion of course could not gather much about her history, but if she was a child of Roguaru's, it wasn't hard to imagine that she'd already experienced some sense of hardship in her short life.

Jabari could see it on her face that whatever he said wasn't necessarily the things she'd hoped to hear. Confusion and frustration clouded her otherwise young and bright features, and Jabari felt like their interaction was likely coming closer to a close. He was old, he mused. He was sad and boring.

One chestnut ear flicked to the side as he registered her quip about the storm, and Jabari offered her another short-lived smile. She had guts, this one. He hoped she would never let someone else squash that in her.

When she asked about home, he took the chance to take a few steps closer to her. His once damp hide was drying. He felt warmer now, but basked in the comfort that came from being next to another warm body. "I grew up on Luthien. In the Prairie. Have you been there before?" He asked, cocking his head to one side. "But now, home is where I make it. It's different every night."

Jabari stiffened upon hearing what she had to say next, briefly shell-shocked by just how blunt she was. He snorted once as he let her words simmer. She was sharp, too. "What's wrong with the home you have now?" He asked first in an attempt to stall. The last thing he wanted to do was hurt her feelings. And perhaps he had truly mislead her all along - he was the one who sought her out in the rain, after all.

"You are beautiful, bold, and brilliant." He said next, his blue eyes searching hers so she knew he meant it. "You could have any home you'd ever want. Why settle for me?"
