That wasn't a rant, Jim. That was me passing on the wisdom the Avademy gave us when they laid half of us off. Their severance was excellent and we valued people got free career planning from some big outfit out on 110th street.
All retirement planners tell ya that stuff as they build your retirement portfolio. Most people, without that, don't have $30k in the bank when they retire and that'll only buy you one car!
The youngsters aren't even guaranteed Social Security at all and can't even get what little they'll offer til youre seventy...right now we can retire at 62 to get most of our benefits!
You're bein a jerk, (Jim or whoever) badmouthing advice that people still in the business need to hear! MY parents didn't tell me that stuff and they retired poor! Before mom died, she shopped at Aldi and bought only what was on sale! And went to the dental college , and ate out only when I took her. Dad went through what little money HE had in the nursing home at $3,000 a month and finished up on state Medicaid. Most elderly do, unless they suddently drop dead. Everyone learns a whole lot when its their job to ease their parents into the ground--but ya don't know any of that till it happens to you.
Few people plan ahead. My dad did because he put his mom and his aunts into the ground and liquidated their heirlooms--most of which came to me in due time. My grandkids call our period living room 'the museum' because I couldn't part with those rare items made before 1930. BTW, don't pitch out their papers and old photos fm WWI. Your kids may want to see them!
