Theyve had enough

How old are you?

Dunno about divine intent but my observation of others, and starting to be true of myself, is that when humans get old and their quality of life diminishes enough, people are ready.

I expect people evaluate what they have to live for...and if they were active and thats what moved them, they won't care about living much when their bodies or their financial situations don't let them do what they really like.

I know of an older man, who was sour but wealthy and he lived for wealth, to cry on his deathbed. But it seems that most people want more out of life and if it's gone, and living gets to be too hard, they'll be ready. Have their affairs in order, are satisfied with their accomplishments and ready for closing credits.

I expect thats especially true when they've outlived the people they've cared about and they dont get pleasure out of even the simple things, like eating, being with people or pets they care about, or able to communicate or even be entertained by the technology.

As Peggy Lee sang in the 50s, "Is that All there Is?" The problem with modern society is that there are those who don't want people to take their own lives in their hands...instead they're expected to outlive their welcome, even if hit hurts every day to get out of bed and even go to the pot without help.

Then there are others, who despite a doubting belief in an afterlife, are so afraid of they end, they'll spend every last dollar they can find to stay above ground. Wonder if St Peter's first words will be, "Hank, why did you wait so long...we have an 'all you can eat buffet up here!"
