the ace in exile

Winter had arrived, bringing with it the chill of memory. There was still a woman here, somewhere on this island, that Viđarr pined for. He waited for her… she hadn’t come. She hadn’t come, and his sides and chest ached. Through autumn it wasn’t as if the shadow could come looking, no, he couldn’t leave the Savanna empty and uncared for. It was in the early days of winter now, and he could finally come back. He could search. Viđarr would do his best to find her again.

If not her, then… well, maybe he would still be of use on the Crossing. It had been his home for longer than even the Savanna had, and in that, he knew its intricacies. The Commons still made him nervous. There were men that would descend on the place like vultures to fresh kill, and it was enough to make his stomach pitch. The shadow wasn’t about to let that happen if he could help it. That, and the landscape was far too exposed to be comforting in the colder months. All things considered, it was dangerous. Maybe there was a bit of a savior complex to the shadow, but he can’t help it. A sentinel, a protector by nature.

The mare that draws his gaze gives him pause. She smells like one of his ghosts. There were so many haunting the Savanna, ones that he would catch only from the corner of his eye. Not part of his family, but not outside his purview. If Viđarr could keep them safe too, he’d do it. Maybe that’s why he calls out to her softly, why he draws near. Not too close, but hopefully close enough to drive off interest from any roving eyes.

“It is not safe here.” The words are stilted, his grasp on the common language still tenuous at best. Viđarr’s ears flicker forward for a moment, lowering his head in greeting. Kindness resonates in his amber gaze, but he’d wait for her reaction. “Between the cold and the company.” It’s a clarification, but there’s worry here. Viđarr, as always, was a worrier. Some things don’t change.
