Have you looked into the cost of living in other surrounding counties? Home costs, increase in travel costs (gas, maintenance), property taxes, HOA fees to name a few. Let's say you're assigned to Engine 45, you live in Kane County, and the city implements an Emergency Recall, and you have an hour to get there and it's 1700 Hrs. You're at your daughters volleyball game, and you're the chauffeur. You have to drop her off at home, get into your uniform, go to Engine 45 then drive to the Academy. How long would it take for you to report to your assignment? Now...you can say "no big deal, hardly ever happens", but the reality is it could happen. You know a residency lawsuit could take up to 10 years right? Motions, status hearings, testimony etc. You also know that many are dug in, kids in local schools, friends, spouses feelings. By the time it's done, many of your co-litigants will be long gone, retired and won't care. While this idea sounds great at the firehouse kitchen table, doubtful you'll get many of them to pony up the cash needed. This has been discussed many years, and maybe go back in CFD history and find out how it all ended. Replies:
