fairy tales wait in mystery and monsters sing in song

Beneath the darkening sky of evening, a dappled grey mare burst from the surf, scrambling onto the beach of the Common and shaking salt water from her mane.

This was... not ideal. She had hoped to reach this island before the sun had set, so the residual light and warmth of the day would dry off her coat quicker. But she'd dallied too long on her previous rest stop, and the sun had already disappeared beneath the waves, and though the air temperature of a pleasant evening in late spring was hardly cold, IT SURE FELT CHILLY WHEN ONE HAD JUST EMERGED FROM THE OCEAN.

Shivering, Stray shook herself again and trotted further inland. If she went past those hills to the meadow beyond, maybe it would be less windy. It was uncomfortable, but she wouldn't die--she'd been cold plenty of times before, and she was sure she'd dry off soon enough. Then again, soon enough was a rather arbitrary period of time, the length of which depended on every unique individual's perception of it. And maybe Stray's perception of that time, in particular, would stretch longer than most. But again, she'd live, and it was her fault really for getting caught up in exploring some ruined piece of rock in the middle of the sea instead of doing the sensible thing and continuing on to somewhere she could eat and rest before dark.

There were one or two solitary figures wandering around the meadow, but Stray didn't think there were really enough to count as a herd. Do many horses live here? she wondered. Back home, decent grazing land was snatched up quickly. Perhaps life here was more communal, and horses were less trigger-happy about claiming everything they could--or maybe there was some other reason for it besides culture or population. Perhaps some kind of hidden danger, like in the legends and folktales? Stray entertained the idea as she lowered her head to graze, still shivering slightly. I'll have to keep an eye out, she thought jokingly.
