You're one of the AA guys that kept me coming back because you don't come across as an evangelical for the 12 steps as they only way to kick the habit.
I did do the expensive treatments but I wasn't ready, they all said. But the last time I went to my longtime AA hall, as a goodwill visit, I went to sing the praises of Naltrexone and the counsel of professionals, rather than amateur drunks.
And one new gal, clearly a thumper shouted me down as some kind of treasonous intruder, daring to suggest something besides Bill Wilson could be effective. I walked out, never to return because she was what I hated about AA, that self righteous phony religious arrogance of people who may have kicked the habit but not the underlying mental illness that caused their self medicating in the first place. My mother once said reformed drunks and reformed whores are the worst people to be around. For an old broad raised by a widow during the Depression, she had that right!
All I sought to do was spread the good news for me to help my afflicted fellows, and she came across like a religious zealot arguing for her denomination, like the 1934 AA book about praying away a medical addiction was the beginning and the end of modern brain study! That's what ya get for free.
Last point, I give people a pass when they quote most statistics as legit, but when someone says drug treatment only works for 5 pct of the people, well the FDA would never approve a drug with such poor results.
I'd need to see the research on that 5 pct number. How can you come up with that number when the treatment industry doesn't even DO long term success/failure followups?? Replies:
