The world was dark and dreary; a sunless existence in an overwhelming world. Well, not really, but that was how Hirka viewed it. Ever since her father had disappeared, the young mare wasn’t sure how she was supposed to exist. How any of them were meant to. He had been here for her entire life, always a simple call away. Now, when she called, only the soft rustle of the palm leaves answered her. Or a caw from one of the island’s many colorful birds. It wasn’t fair, how miserable life had become, and Hirka could barely stand it.

Despite knowing how worried it would make her mother, Hirka slipped away from her and Titus. The young mare needed a breather. To try and see something in color after the pain of darkness and black and white. Looking at the heartbreak on Halcyon’s face was only a reminder of what had been lost. Hirka wanted to forget, even for just a little bit, what that ripping feeling in her chest felt like.

Taking one of the many carved trails through the Shore that snaked further inland, Hirka kept a wary eye for any danger. The memory of saving Allegra from the forest cat was still fresh in her mind, and her nerves were beginning to get the better of her when a new scent caught her attention. Stopping, Hirka glanced around and realized she had crossed the border. Ears flicking with her unease, the young mare tossed a look over her shoulder as she wondered if she should go back. No, she quickly thought to herself. I wanted a distraction.

With new determination, Hirka looked ahead of her once more and pressed on. Curious of this new territory leader and what sort of neighbor they now had.
