He heard, rather than saw, the clicking of teeth as the pale mare warned him away. Fell paid it no mind. He had taken his fare share of punches, and sometimes even gracefully. Feisty little mares were indeed far more fun than obstinate stallions. He snapped back at her, playfully, harmlessly — for now.

“Well, what do you have to say for yourself? Brute.” Fell’s ears flattened, but he tempered his anger with a chuckle. Nothing, he thought. Even if I could. She backed away as she awaited an answer that would never come, and for a few moments Fell let her. Her lithe form seemed to glow beneath the moonlight, and even if she slipped away through the trees, she would be easy to find.

With each step the mare took away from him, Fell began to take a careful step forward, but he came no closer. A fearful or angry mare was fine, but a panicky mare was something else. This mare did not seem panicky, at least not yet, so after a few steps Fell closed the distance. She did not seem to be in any sort of complacent mood, but a little fight was more fun anyway. The Marwari stallion did not have endless patience, but he had enough to indulge in a game or two — on the way home.

Lowering his dark head, Fell circled toward the mare’s hindquarters, prepared to dodge a kick that would sure come. He struck out with his teeth at one thigh, intending to drive her forward, get her moving. It didn’t matter what direction she took off in; he could correct her and steer her back toward the shore once she picked up her feet.
