She didn't think, couldn't think, even if she wanted to. She just ran, and ran, and ran until the cold ocean pressed up against her chest, the waves washing over her head and neck and face, burying her beneath their obsessive force. She didn't swim. She ran through the ocean, thrashing and kicking like a wild beast, as though the very creature she was fleeing was behind her.

It was not the first time Sonorae had caught scent of the monster on the wind. He had come (she was certain) to Atlantis once before some years ago, although he had never tread so far south as to touch Paradise. This time though, she had no one.

No Rougaru to hold her close and promise to protect her. No Faelyn. No Roux. No Monster. Not even Temblor was there to cup the edges of her terrified face and promise her that everything would be fine. That nothing bad would happen to her ever again. Even if they were empty words, they were something to hold up in defiance against the fear that rendered her helpless.

The combination of her losses with the madness that had slowly begun to creep in after Rougaru's theft of Shiloh had eroded what little sense of security she had managed to build. Without a buffer or a confidant, the mere possibility that the nameless brute that had ushered her into early motherhood against her will was back on Atlantis sent her fleeing like a startled bird toward the most direct path away.

By the time the Sonorae's limp body reached the edges of the Crossing, she was adrift in a sea of white, barely conscious and not at all aware of where she was or why she was there. The frenetic pace of her early journey had sapped the strength from her limbs; the only thing keeping her pale muzzle above the surface was a piece of flotsam that she had managed to tuck beneath her forelimb and neck.

She drifted in the eddies of the small cove she'd landed in, oblivious to the world around her.
