Paid better than other cities? Like where? You can't compare to some city in Arizona or Florida. Look locally in northern Illinois - dozens of suburban departments making higher pay than CFD. Also, do your homework on the "downstate" pension system in Illinois (applies to all paid departments in Illinois other than Chicago) - their pensions and their widow benefits are far superior to City of Chicago pension.

Head to the suburbs - better pay, better pension, better benefits, better schools and far less crime.

Oh, you do have to be able to pass more than a 4th grade reading test to get on - so that might be a deterrent for many.
