whatever you do;

make certain your hands are clean ; She gasps, and Rafe makes a displeased little face. So much for the hope she would go quietly. But really, thinking that anything sharing even a modicum of Fell’s blood would be easy to handle is his own mistake. Fell may not speak, but he has a certain, unparalleled ability to be so remarkably loud in everything he does. Loud feet, loud movements, loud teeth gnashing and legs churning. To assume one of his children with a voice to be anything less is a fool's errand.
“Your mother?” he asks, surprised that this is Kohelet’s daughter. Would dragging her back to the Badlands kick off the threatened war with all of Tinuvel? Perhaps not if Rafe had succeeded in spreading word of Fell to both Kohelet and Xiomara, but it still remains to be seen if either icy queen believed him. Sometimes admitting to the evil of those closest to you simply cannot be done - Rafe knows well his own mother did much the same in her early years with his father. Does he really want to risk angering an entire continent because he claimed one filly? It may not be worth it - but she is in the Commons after all, and there are worse things lurking than him.
“I returned Kohelet,” he reminds the nervous filly. “And there wasn’t any playing involved. She was in the Badlands for a very specific reason; that reason was fulfilled, and so she is home. Surely the children told you she was fine? Surely she herself told you she never suffered so much as a raised voice.” Just the truth. Just that deadly knowledge that Rafe has long understood can be used to cause far more harm than any lie ever could.
Really, though, Rafe doesn’t know why he bothers trying to soothe the filly. Short of Marceline or one of her newly-found Peak sisters intervening, she has little choice. And he’s weighed the risks, the chance that Tinuvel will come for him and found it wanting. He isn’t going to hurt her, and he hasn’t taken her from her bed. She is a mare grown, in a place where the expected behavior is being dragged back to whatever herd gets to her first.
Kohelet’s daughter postures then, her neck arched and chest puffed in an imitation of confidence. But the tremble in her slim white-splashed legs is visible, and Rafe can’t bite back an amused little snort. “This is the exact opposite of not making a scene,” he drawls out. Rafe takes a calm step forward, ears half-pinned as he extends his neck out, tossing his chin to snake her back from the stream. He’s contained stronger mares than this one, dragged much more formidable prizes back to the Badlands.
“I don’t particularly care if you don’t want to join me. I found you here first, little Fell daughter, and you’ve little choice but to come along.” He glances at her then, icy gaze shrewd, flickering over her and then dismissing her with a roll of his eyes before he drawls, “If it helps, I don’t actually want you. But it will annoy your father, and it is the least he deserves after all he has done.”
