Some stations promotions people find emmys very marketable and pay the fees. Some even plan investigative reports and offer reporters/producers/and photogs time to produce what they hope will win them. "Our award winning news team...." makes for a great way of putting your news department out there to establish reputations.
Ketz has always been one to do exemplary work and get assigned plumb topics. Me, I never won one but no station I worked at entered the competition. I have a flew plaques and medals but most of them were for exemplary photojournalism. The way to win those is to write a good story, shut up, and let the pictures tell the stories. Not a bad outlook from a guy who cut his journalistic teeth in RADIO!! I had a good chief photographer who taught me how to do that. Replies:
