THE THING IN YOU THAT FEEDS THE ANIMAL IN ME

The mare who stood among the turquoise shallows was not only much taller than Kharin, but built much more thickly of muscle than he was. Not only because he was still young, but because he had influence from his mother’s desert blood and had a mostly lithe carriage. In a few years he would fill out more, but there was still time yet.

Kharin slowed to a pause, lifting his head high so he could study her more clearly. Where he was a canvas of rich golds and bold sharp-edged whites, the mare was a deep gray, reminding him somewhat of a storm cloud. His tail lifted somewhat off his haunches, a quiver of anticipation and excitement running through his body. He snorted back at her, though his was less aggressive and more indignantly curious. She looked poised to charge, and he wondered if she might. He’d be a fool to collide with her, or even spin among the sand and sea and kick their back legs at one another; one skilled, landed hit from her hooves on his thin back legs would be excruciating.

But even knowing that did not make him bow or submit, or show himself as non-aggressive as he likely should have. His intrigue to know and to experience something new was too great.

Should the mare advance, Kharin would hold his ground. The most respectful he would be is to not take another step further into her territory until she permitted it; for as the tropical breeze carried her scent (hers, saltwater, and the slight tang of iron) to him he knew immediately she was this territory’s lead. Her scent had filled the land thickly where he had explored this far.

Kharin grinned and struck out at the sand with his pale hoof, though he didn’t dig into it, but made a quick stroke above it. Not quite pawing at the ground, but teasing the action. Just as he teased trespassing into her territory.

His blue eyes were bright as they watched her.
