The silver grullo stallion observed the young mare quietly as she deliberated. Her wavering thoughtfulness and the color of her pelt reminded him of the dawn. His mind's eye envisions the cool fog of an autumn morning forming droplets on his whiskers, then sees the sun's first tentative rays beginning to peek over the horizon.
"I don't think I want to." The pale mare's gazed lifted to his, the color of her eyes pulling him both toward and from the imagined dawn. "I've never felt like I belonged there." This he understood well. Hadn't that been a key reason he'd decided to the Desert? The silver strands of his mane flutter against his neck a the grullo nods slowly, thoughtfully. He mused that she had her own shadows to escape.
Canis could pass little judgment, of course. He had done much the same as she did, though perhaps his family had had more warning? He would have shrugged if he could at the thought. They were young and prone to running off. Isn't that what the older horses spouted again and again? Her sigh whisks him back to her, its perceived tenor pricking at his ears. "Although… there’s nowhere else I can go but back to the Badlands. I don’t know anyone else but my family.”
"You could go with me, if you wanted to." The words are out before Canis' brain has a moment to catch up. He didn't have to worry about working up to offering his company now. The young stallion manages to not let his eyeballs bulge out with an expression that read 'Oh shit. Did I really just say that?' Instead his pale lips press together tightly in anticipation, as if taking a breath might be all she needs to say no. Canis was surprised at himself though. He hadn't anticipated finding someone so like himself in such a chance encounter.
