He existed. He ate and slept and breathed, but he did little else. The jungle asked little of him, and the residents of the Ridge asked less than that, which was the way he liked it. Drogon had come to find him some months ago, although it could hardly be called a social visit. He'd only wanted to ascertain that Wulfric lived, and once satisfied that this was the case, had departed again.


This solitude suited Wulfric just fine. He found a certain peace in it, in being alone and unobserved. The birds did not judge his appearance any more than the panthers did. That, much, at least, he could count on.


This contentment did not, unfortunately, stifle the longing for company. It woke him sometimes at the strangest times, squeezing his heart with loneliness until he broke from the dark reaches of the jungle and lingered near the beaches, where the trees were thinner and the freckles of sunlight singed his hide. Wulfric did not know who he sought. He had never socialized long enough to consider anyone more than an acquaintance, but he thought of her sometimes.


She had said nothing to him, only ghosted away deeper into the jungle.


But he thought of her.


Especially now that she had garnered herself a companion, a man with hair as rich and golden as the sun above. A man unmarked by scars, one who walked as easily in the light as he did the dark, glowing for her like her own personal beacon.


As if his thoughts had summoned her, he caught the shifting of sand beneath her hoofprints, a pattern he'd come to memorize during the times he'd spent watching her. He turned as if to leave before hesitating, one hoof lifted above the damp sandy soil, and then changed his mind. "You're alone." He spoke low, his voice as gruff as it had been last time. Again, he lingered in the shadows, letting them cloak his presence. "Why?"
