Fell

It’s not as much of a shock these days as it had been when he had first been received by a strange mare without immediate rejection. Fell is always on his toes, ready for a retaliatory bite or kick from a mare when he’s too pushy, but he’s had more success than he’d expected when he first claimed the Bay.

When the little gray mare does not back down from his approach, Fell’s confidence swells. His nostrils flare and quiver as she receives his muzzle, drinking in the scent of somewhere far away, unrecognizable. They part – only by a few inches – and she responds to his pawing at the ground with a squeal. It’s a delightful sound, and Fell rears with her, happy to receive the playful batting of her hooves against him. He boxes with her for a moment, hardly allowing his feathered hooves to brush against her pale hide. He wields himself like a big cat, hyper aware of his strength and his capacity to do damage, and swats at her harmlessly in the few breathless seconds they are upright.

Then the two of them come down, and Fell watches her display appreciatively. She parades back and forth in front of him, and the Marwari stallion actually exercises a bit of impulse control in order to watch her for a few minutes. His ears cup forward, and he’s leaning forward onto his toes like a dog awaiting a promised treat.

When he can stand still no longer, Fell surges forward into a rolling canter, his pace intent but unhurried. He lopes alongside her, dropping to a trot in order to reach out with his muzzle and aim a gentle but unambiguous nip at her neck where her alabaster hair is parted and tossed to the other side. Then he darts away, his ears twisted back and face tilted slightly to one side, keeping his gaze fixed on her. He drops his head low and crow hops a few times, slowing down and then taking off again to taunt her into chasing him.
