The 9th annual Carden Alvar Christmas Bird Count was held on Saturday, December 30, 2006. Twelve participants in the field plus 9 others watching feeders counted 37 species and 2868 individual birds. No new species were recorded for the count but record highs for Canada Geese 79 (39 in 2003), Downy Woodpeckers 42 (39 in 2005), Golden-crowned Kinglets 19 (16 in 2000), European Starlings 697 (609 in 2001), and Dark-eyed Juncos 114 (65 in 2000). Black-backed Woodpecker, White-winged Crossbills, Northern Shrikes, Rough-legged Hawks, and several flocks of Snow Buntings were birds of interest. Seven mammal species were observed with no new species but record highs for both black and gray Eastern Gray Squirrels.
