Northern Shrike Posted on March 6, 2008 at 03:29:38 PM by Nath Rockhill
Yesterday one of the small birds that picks up food from the surface of the snow -- almost undoubtedly a redpoll -- became lunch for a shrike that grabbed it, flew with it into a bush, then was seen down on the snow in the driveway, pecking at it. Today at about 10:20 a shrike perched in the Mock Orange bush three feet from the kitchen window near the driveway. It flew off before I could reach my camera, and I couldn't relocate it. Not much action among the little birds -- in fact, none of the usual flock of 20-50 redpolls has been seen today, perhaps a coincidence?
