I did a walk today (Tues) along Wylie Rd from the cabin to Sedge Wren Marsh & the pervading sound seemed to be the love calls of Western Chorus Frogs. After a long winter it was nice to hear the songs of Eastern Bluebirds, Eastern Meadowlarks, & Song Sparrows. Several Wilson's Snipe were calling & giving flight displays. I observed 2 Mourning Cloak butterflies flitting by, revived from their overwintering torpor. They survive winter temperatures by seeking a sheltered microhabitat, lowering the freezing point of their body fluids (supercooling) & producing biochemical antifreeze such as sugar alcohols. A very nice day for a walk. Replies: There have been no replies.
