Carden Alvar Nature Board by Bob BowlesThe Harrier and the Hare

I just returned from Wylie Road where I watched a Northern Harrier hunting low over the fields south of Box 10 on the east side. It was circling, and I noticed what appeared to be a brown-phase Snowshoe Hare running underneath it. Every time the harrier turned, so did the hare, which ran back and forth as though it was playing with the bird, or trying to stay with it, rather than escape. Finally it dodged into a group of hawthorns, and stood still at the base of one. The harrier moved off, hopefully to find some prey rather than more play!
