Don't worry, it confuses a lot of people xD

Points are used solely to increase your level. On the Rules page it shows you how many points you need to go up a level. You can earn points by:
- Advertising (see Spam board for how many points you can get for advertising on various sites)
- Referrals (every time you refer someone to this game, you get +5 points)
- Fighting or debating for them in the Desolate Planes
- Having babies ;P
- Meeting targets - if we get x number of visitors to the site in a day, every active character gets +5 free points. Also, on the Chat board there are some links to top listing sites - if we get to a target rank on each of those, active characters get +5 points.
- Points can also be won in contests/tournaments.

Along with various other ways. ^^ As you wander around the site, if there is anything written in grey, that means points or coins can be earned.

Coins do absolutely nothing to increase your level. A coin can either be traded for:
- A familiar (you can only do this once, as each fairy can only have one familiar during its lifetime)
- A magical power (you can go to the power plots board for power ideas)
- The chance to choose the statistics for your baby if you breed. If you have two coins, you can trade them for twins.

Coins are much harder to earn than points. The main way to get them is winning them in contests/tournaments.

If you want something specifically, be it a coin, some points, a familiar, a power or whatever, you can post your character in the Shrine (Play -> Outer Border -> The Shrine) and have them request whatever it is they want of Aura. Aura may explain to them how they can get what they want and will always give them a chance to get it. :)

So, to answer your final question - coins are the main way to get familiars, but you can also ask Aura for a familiar in the Shrine. She won't necessarily give you one, though. ^^
