Or rather, it does. Because Räendel isn’t a ‘she’ any more than it is a ‘he’, or a hummingbird. Once upon a time it had defined itself along the wavelengths of female – a female that was slender, too bony, too muscular, and not at all feminine. It had been easier like that, because then well, then Räendel wasn’t anything but Räendel, and males involved physical parts that it had never obviously had,
(until that night, that is. Until that one crazy, wonderful, dreadful night –)
and females were always lacking. Always missing parts, blood, tears, like Räendel had.
So it’d been female and an Amazon to boot, because that was easier that way.
Death kind of puts things in perspective.
The words flit on the edge of its consciousness, but Räendel just smiles and says, “hello”. It’s a simple word and Räendel’s voice breaks lightly over it, neither male nor female, polished to perfect ambiguity – simply because s/he had been born that way and s/he, well, had been reborn like that – over and over and over.
It doesn’t turn to look. Its eyes – hers, his, whatever – roll in their sockets, but not a muscle follows: only the eyes, rich and amethyst-colored, the occasional blink, and the soft after-effect of its voice answering back – “hello”.
