Ice Mountain

The Ice Mountain is much smaller than Wolf Mountain, yet climbing up it is far more difficult and shouldn't be attempted in winter. Some creatures collect the shiny stones at the peak of this mountain for necklaces.

Kuni didn’t shy away from Dracanas approach, standing motionless except for the movement of her sides as she focused her breathing, resting from her trek that had gotten her this far up the mountain. Her words had also failed to cause a verbal reaction for Kuni. Dracana spoke the truth; Kuni had no idea that this could end one of two ways. One would ultimately lead in her demise, the other was unknown at the moment for the young she-wolf. She held the green- eyed stare of the other, a thing not many would do. Ignorance is bliss they say.

She ####ed her head quizzically at the rather sharp bark Dracana gave, not knowing it meaning but understanding she would now get to prove herself and ultimately her willingness to survive and succeed, maybe even gain her favor and have a new rare path be revealed for Kunoichi. Her focus was brought back to Dracana when she spoke. She then disappeared all together, but reappeared on a ledge further off with a grin that for Kuni meant the stakes hadn’t just been raised, but were shot through the roof. However, she remained confident and her expression was still calm and collective. She got right to business, she assessed the rest of the way up the mountain for a few moments, picking out a path that seemed easiest, or rather more direct. There was one that was smoother, but would take longer and be draining for the body. Another was shorter and more direct, but was so steep it would be even more dangerous. The last was something in the middle- neutral grounds as one would say. It was still stones and rock, and in places covered in ice and snow, with moss and lichens or some sort growing in cracks but there were only in patches before becoming bare once more. After a distance it became unforgiving ice and snow, the areas of snow she would most likely take.

Reminding herself to breathe deeply so she would put the oxygen to good use, she started moving with calculated steps. So onward she continued, the only sounds were her breathing and the minute thuds of her paws on the rock. It was quieter than it was before, but it still- annoyingly- echoed, granted not as much as she had started out but she was far from silence. After having flat pieces of the stone shift under her and threaten to move down the mountain Kuni had adjusted her steps. On more than one occasion she used the moss and lichens as footholds that allowed her to cover certain areas with speed and agility without being too taxing on the body. When she adjusted her steps they had become lighter now, and fell on the rocks with less noise. After some time though, her pace quickened and it appeared as though she had a spring in her step, prancing maybe but with grace that conflicted with it. She realized this and forced herself to slow. She had covered the whole of the stones and rocky area, but her muscles began to burn again and were almost visibly flexing beneath her thick pelt.

Now here was the harder challenge, the snow and ice now covered the stones and rocks and began thicker and more layered by the foot. She paused, moderately attuned to her surroundings though hearing and scent, even glancing around here every once in a while. The “real monster” threat had obviously been taken seriously, but her primary focus was still to get to the summit. Every step brought her closer, but she refused to look at it because it still seemed too far away. Her paws hit the snow just as lightly as they did the stone if not lighter and more precise. Suddenly, she slipped when she unwittingly stepped on the ice and lost her footing momentarily. She fell on her chest and started to skid backwards. Her eyes widened in panic at the shifting snow, breathing on the verge of hyperventilation which was the last thing she needed right now. She dug her back paws into the snow in hopes to gain footing, and she did. She pushed off from her position and leapt diagonally some 3 maybe 4 feet. As soon as she touched the ground she leapt again- ignoring the intensifying burning reaction of her muscles and landed on a hidden ledge covered by a few inches of snow with ice surrounding its edges. She took a few moments to once again steady her breathing, as well as give her aching muscles a break. The lactic acid was building, and if it hadn’t been for her having already worked them when young and then travelling Wolf Mountain she would’ve fainted or collapsed from exhaustion by now, most likely way before now. Her tongue lolled out as she began to pant, but that caused a feeling of light headedness and every breath to sear her throat and enter her lungs.

After some minutes, no more than 5, she began to cover the rest of the distance. She was so close now, the summit was within sight and maybe a couple to a few hundred yards now. She knew though, that she must keep her cool and continue slower since the altitude was wreaking havoc in her lungs, but she kept breathing deeply and steadily even though it burned her nose with an icy fire and made its movement down her throat and into her lungs painful and would soon be numb- if it wasn't for the pain.
