Carden Alvar Nature Board by Bob Bowlesyellow rail

After missing the Yellow Rail at Sedge Wren Marsh last night, I decided to try again tonight. On walk from the lot, as I was almost at the bridge, I could clearly hear what sounded like a Yellow Rail. The sun had just set and the sky was still quite light at around 8:30 pm.

Then Anne and Maureen arrived from Peterborough and all three of us heard the Yellow Rail very clearly despite the frog chorus three to four times between 8:50 and 9:10 pm. It was calling from the east side of the bridge. We stayed just long enough to hear the Whip-poor-will and then hit the road.

Also calling were the American Bitterns and Soras as well as Swamp Sparrows. Overhead were Wilson's Snipes, Canada Geese and Mallard Ducks.

The beaver was prowling around and ended up splashing us when it slapped its tail right beside the bridge.
