AZURE BEACH
A search is underway for the body of Jake Adams, aged 23, following an accident on the cliffs overlooking Aell?Cove. Authorities say Jake fell over the precipice in the middle of a party celebrating the end of spring semester, plunging 70 feet to the water below. Alcohol is believed to have played a role in tragedy, but friends flatly reject the idea.
"He wasn't some stupid drunken college kid," says Natalie Tait, Adams' girlfriend. She claims that Adams was lured onto the back of a beautiful horse that emerged from the trees as they sat around their bonfire which then carried him over the edge at a full gallop.
Her version of events is supported by the others who were present.
"It was like he was in a trance," says Gordon Richter. "We were screaming at him to get off but he wouldn't."
"He couldn't," corrects another friend who declined to be named. "He was struggling but he couldn't jump off."
Sheriff Cameron McGranor believes that this is a case of mass hysteria following their witnessing a traumatic event.
"There is nothing to support their claims," she says. "No hoof prints. No sign at all of anything remotely similar to a horse passing through here."
She refused to comment on spreading rumors that a kelpie seemed to be the most likely culprit.
"This was just a tragic accident," she says.
This is not the first time mythical sea monsters have supposedly been sighted in or near Azure Beach.
In 1981, fifteen fishing boats were wrecked at sea over a span of nine months, leaving experts baffled at the cause of the damage. Survivors from the separate incidents have all claimed to see huge, serpent-like animals vanishing into the depths of the ocean as their boats sank beneath the water.
Five years later, in September 1986, a man claimed to have found and hidden the sealskin of a selkie, though the evidence was never produced due to his fears that his new wife would 'steal it back and return to the ocean forever.'
More recently, in June 2010, a man suspicious of his girlfriend's tendencies of sneaking away one night every week followed her down to the beach where he claims her legs transformed into the tail of a bottle-nosed dolphin before she disappeared into the water, never to re-emerge.
The mayor of Azure Beach would like to reassure all local residents and potential visitors that there is absolutely nothing to be afraid of, and to remind everyone to always follow the safety rules posted on the beach.
