A coin is required to gain a familiar, and new members receive one free coin when they join, so you can have a familiar. How you choose to obtain the familiar in character is entirely up to you... some people play out the transaction of trading a coin, others have their fairies just meet their familiars, others have their familiars appear out of nowhere. it's your choice. :)
