wear no crowns and win no glory

Did I? she thought in response to his words, and her mind began racing, searching for a reason why she might have offered him the traditional greeting for someone less fortunate than herself. Honestly, she could not remember. Her first few weeks on the islands had been a blur, and she could recall the details of her conversations with the various equine she'd met no better than she could recall what she'd had for breakfast a week ago. She was impressed nonetheless that he had remembered; obviously her customs were unusual to him, and thus far more memorable than the usual drivel he likely heard on a daily basis.

It was as she continued staring at him blankly, her white lips parted with incomprehension, that she noticed the cloudiness of one of his eyes. Could that be it? She remembered now, vaguely, that she had felt uncomfortable the first time she had noticed his ailment. Surely that is the reason; I can't think of anything else. Even so, it was awfully rude of me to acknowledge his disability in such a manner. The phrase was normally reserved for those who were obviously struggling with injury, grief, or disease: not someone who seemed to be functioning just fine.

"Oh," she finally said, her voice barely a whisper. "You are Dante, yes? Forgive me... my mind was elsewhere. It is good to see you again." She offered him a small, barely-visible smile and took a step closer to him across the sand just as a salty breeze tousled her blonde locks, casting them forward in an arc towards the chestnut male. Perhaps this is Aeros' will after all, she decided, instantly relaxing some. " 'Aruna keep you', it means... It is a respectful greeting, similar to 'Aeros guide you'. The latter is more commonly used day to day, while the former is reserved for more... sensitive situations." She flicked her tail anxiously, wondering what he would make of that.
